Claim your Story-Set Yourself Free by Rene Johnson
Each one of us has a personal story woven throughout the pages of our life. This story tells of who we can become, what we can do or who we can be. It unfolds through our choices, how we feel about ourselves and in our capability to create an exciting more rewarding life for ourselves
Each and every day we get to play the leading role in our story. What will be written on the next page? We get to decide by how we show up in our life today.
What does your story look like? Are you excited to play it out? Or do you dread reading ahead? Does your future story have exciting possibilities and fulfilling adventures? Or do you want to skip the pages, and hope that on its own; your story will magically change, disappear or dissolve.
Tapping into the power of your story and setting yourself free requires two things: Practicing self-awareness and then taking risks to change your story.
“Awareness is always the first step because if you are not aware, there is nothing you can change.” – Don Miguel Ruiz
This sounds basic right? However, you’d be surprised how this universal principle and the power it holds to set you free, is overlooked or taken for granted. Perhaps even by you?
By taking time to evaluate the story you “tell” yourself about your capability to change or create the life you desire –played out in your thoughts, your choices, the words you use, how you honor yourself or not – you can unlock your potential and set yourself free from the limits and restrictions that hold you back. You can then look at taking risks to grow as an adventure, an opportunity to claim the life you deserve.
Putting on blinders will NOT make your story change for the better! Eventually, you’ll have to face the areas you want to change (personally or professionally), whether that is 1 year or 10 years from now. Why put it off? The power to shift your future story is totally up to you.
Tip– Begin by using a journal and write out what your story looks like for one week.
* What are all the roles you play, what are you doing, what do you like and what do you not, what successes do you celebrate, what do you wish you were celebrating?
* Commit to 10 minutes everyday, be honest with yourself and don’t judge, allow yourself to write freely.
* Then after one week go back, and read your story. What does your story tell? What unhealthy patterns do you see? What opportunities could you create?
Stop living from a place of conflict and let go of your guilt, claim your story and prepare to write a new one! Set yourself free and make the choice to use your personal power and create the change you desire. Shift your thinking from it’s not possible to go after what you want, to the excitement of the story that lies ahead of you.

In one of the many trainings I have attended over the years, I learned a powerful sentence that has stuck with me and shaped teh way that I look at my life “Who would you be without your story?” In this context it was about letting go of history, of the story that you tell yourself, and really being open to the possibility of something different.
One of the things I love about my LifeVision, is I could look at my future as a blank slate, and create with clear goals and a detailed plan, the life that I want…in effect, re-writing my story.
Everyday that I listen to myself, in my own voice speak my vision for my ideal life, I am re-writing my story and owning the power I have to create what I want.
Great comment! “Our Story” has typically had a negative connotation for me as well. But this article shifts that into “our story” is for us to design and define!
At the end of most days I find myself asking myself “What did I do today?” I wish I lived with more purpose and intention so that I could write a more meaningful story. Thanks for inspiring me to do so!
Raising a young family is living with purpose! Don’t underestimate what you’re doing. You’ll never regret those precious moments with that darling baby!
