Aspire – Discovering Your Purpose through the Power of Words- by Kevin Hall
“Aspire -Discovering Your Purpose Through the Power of Words” by Kevin Hall is a unique book taking 11 powerful words and using them as the framework for presenting ideas and concepts around personal development. This book is nothing like a boring vocabulary book, but rather provides a solid intellectual and emotional journey. Kevin introduces many interesting people, including the Arthur, a linguistics professor who touches Kevin’s life in a deep way. All the stories within the book are compelling, motivating and illustrate the power of each word. I love how he gives us a call to action at the end of each chapter by asking us to identify and honor our own “practitioner” of the word, and then to reach out and share the word with them.
I have taken this to heart and purchased 11 books from Kevin. Each day over the last 2 weeks, I have re-read one chapter and thought deeply about who personifies the word. I have then taken a Power of Words card (that Kevin gave me) and shared with this person WHY I think they are a powerful example of that word. It’s hard to accurately describe the emotions that come to the surface when you are sharing with another the power and example they are in your own personal life. This book has also been a very powerful catalyst in building relationships for me.
The eleven words explored in this book are:
- Genshai (The Secret Word)
- Pathfinder
- Namaste’
- Passion
- Sapere Vedere
- Humility
- Inspire
- Empathy
- Coach
- Ollin
- Integrity
It’s very hard for me to pick my favorite word/chapter, but I would have to say that the chapter on Genshai has had a lasting effect on me. The Ancient Hindi word Genshai. (pronounced gen-shy) means that you should never treat another person in a manner that would make them feel small. But it also goes deeper than that and conveys the feeling that you should never treat yourself in a way that makes you feel small or allow another to do so.
In the chapter on Genshai, Kevin writes about the man who taught him the word—an India-born shopkeeper he met in Vienna named Pravin. Pravin told Kevin that it was his mother who had instilled the principles of Genshai in his life. He remembered one lesson in particular recounting, “If I were to walk by a beggar in the street and casually toss him a coin, I would not be practicing Genshai. But if I knelt down on my knees and looked him in the eye when I placed that coin in his hand, that coin became love. Then and only then, after I had exhibited pure, unconditional brotherly love did I become a true practitioner of Genshai.”
That impacted me!
Kevin is a personal friend of mine and let me just say that he’s the REAL DEAL! And it’s with great honor that I am excitedly partnering with him on a Joint Venture that includes Ideal LifeVision. “Finding your Life Purpose through the power of words” is a sub title of both of our businesses. So hang tight because it won’t be long before you will be hearing more about this!

I am almost done reading this book, and I am loving it! I think each chapter is amazing. I am caught between wanting to read the book fast and learn what all the words mean, and wanting to take my time and let each word sink in.
I love genshai and pathfinder — pathfinder really helped me see a deeper meaning in the word leader. I thought empathy was a really interesting chapter, too. I always thought of empathy as having gone through something that someone else is going through — I like how he talked about meeting people where they are as empathy.
Great book!
Genshai was a powerful word for me. The example he gives about bending down to the beggar and turning that coin into Love really hit me.
Thanks for commenting.
So, so good! I am reading it right now. Teleconference, guess it was moved to August 10th, will be wonderful, I will definitely be a listener on that call! Thank you Ann for sharing your insights about the book, it makes me that much more excited to finish.
You’re welcome Ashley. At some point I think I’ll be a guest on Kevin’s mastermind call. We have lots to share about how Lifevision plays into his Vision chapter…now sure what the word was now. hmmm
